Fabric Covered Button Tutorial

Buttons are always a fun item to craft with. What's even more fun? Fabric covered buttons! These adorable buttons can be made using any fabric and lend themselves to a wide variety of uses from sewing projects to cute crafts.

After turning some into push pins for a previous post, it occurred to me that a lot of people may not know how to make fabric covered buttons, so I decided the other day to whip up a short tutorial. Many of you may already know how to make them, but just in case you don't...this tutorial offers a quick, easy way.

How to Make Fabric Covered Buttons

What You'll Need:
Directions:
  1. Most stores that sell sewing notions will have a button kit for making covered buttons. The kit should come with a pusher (blue piece in the picture), button backs, button shells, and mold (white piece in the picture).
  2. Cut out a small piece of scrap fabric. One that is just a few inches on each side will work perfectly.
  3. Place the fabric right side down on top of the mold which is similar to a rubber bottle cap. The button shell will then go face down on top of the fabric.
  4. Push the button shell down into the mold. You want the fabric to fully cover the shell on all sides.  If there is too much excess fabric, you can trim a little off.
  5. Place the button back into the button shell with the fabric tucked away inside. Make sure that the loop of the button back is facing up.
  6. Secure the button back into the shell by firmly pushing down on the pusher piece in your kit.  You will hear a small snap when this step is complete.

Simple and easy! There are so many things that you can do with these cute fabric covered buttons. Here are just a few ideas...

Happy Crafting!

    1. You're welcome, Maureen. I'm planning a compilation post full of ideas for using them soon. I got my kit from Hobby Lobby, but any store that sells sewing materials would probably have them. The fabrics were given to me by Felicia from All Things Fee when we did a package pal swap. http://allthingsfee.blogspot.com/2012/05/package-pals.html I will ask her where she got the fabrics.
