Forget spring cleaning! As a busy homeschool mom, I find that summer is the perfect time to tackle deep cleaning tasks and to get the house back in tip-top shape. The area that always seems to need the most attention is our homeschool room which I've already been busily working on preparing for our next year of homeschooling! Here are five simple steps that I'm using to get our homeschool room ready for the next school year. Hopefully, these are steps that can help you as you plan and prepare for your next school year. Not a homeschool parent? These tips can be adapted to get almost any room in your home decluttered and organized to the max!

By the end of the school year, it feels like the homeschool stuff has ended up everywhere. Nothing is in its place. There's finished work on the kitchen table, books on the couch, and materials scattered across the house like a breadcrumb trail. I get it! Between co-op classes, dance lessons, soccer practices, school lessons, nature walks, outings, motherhood, and day-to-day responsibilities, there just never seems to be enough time. And the homeschool materials can get a little out of hand. Oh, and let's not forget the sheer amount of papers and books that can accumulate during this homeschool journey.

Shew! Is your head spinning yet? Because mine sure was! By the end of this last year, I felt like the school stuff was taking over. It was time to purge and get organized! With a more minimalistic approach in mind, I began the process of cleaning out the homeschool room. And I have to admit that I went from feeling burned out to inspired and ready to tackle another year in the fall.

We homeschool during the traditional school year with a few modifications here and there. I know a lot of families prefer to school year-round. Even if your family doesn't take a long break during the summer, there is probably a transition period from one year to the next that would be a great time to prep and prepare for the next round of school.

These steps truly can work for any homeschool! Are you schooling on a traditional schedule? Does your family prefer a year-round approach? Do you have an entire room in your home dedicated to schooling? Is your dining room pulling double duty? No matter what your situation is, these simple steps will help make the seemingly overwhelming task of organizing the school stuff as easy as A B C! Ready to get started? Here are five simple steps to getting everything organized!
Family pizza night gets an upgrade with a classic crust pizza paired with this recipe for homemade Antipasto Pasta Salad. It's a delicious combo that will have everyone asking for seconds! If you're looking for an effortless summer meal, this one is sure to be a crowd pleaser!
Friday nights have become pizza and movie night for our family. It's a time for us to all come together at the end of a busy week to relax, share a meal, laugh, and just enjoy being with each other.

It's also one night that I don't have to answer the question, "What am I going to make for dinner?" Our favorite pizza from Red Baron helps calm the mealtime chaos. Their pizza crust is perfection--not too thick and not too thin. It's a crispy, airy, flaky layered crust that is simply classic. My mom, two of the kids, and I can all enjoy cheese while my husband can savor a meatier option. (I do have to still come up with a non-dairy option for my youngest who has a severe allergy, but we have that one covered.) Yes, the mealtime battle is no longer a battle on Fridays.

Some weeks I like to add extras to our Friday meal such as breadsticks, sides, salads, or even pasta salads like the homemade Antipasto Pasta salad I'm sharing with you today. Made with fresh herbs and vegetables from our garden, it's a pasta salad that's perfect for summer. Paired with pizza or as a standalone meal, this is a dish your family will want to enjoy again and again.

During the summer months, I try to come up with as many recipes as I can that incorporate the ingredients we pick from our garden. We've been harvesting lettuce and kale from the garden since spring, but the tomatoes finally came in and ripened enough to pick. Although this recipe for Antipasto Pasta Salad does call for two canned ingredients, the onions and herbs are also fresh.

Don't have a garden? No worries! Your local farmer's market or grocery store is sure to have you covered.

Ready to try this tasty, homemade pasta salad for yourself? Grab those ingredients and let's start cooking. The fresh ingredients and tangy zest from the vinaigrette make it a perfect appetizer or standalone meal for summer! Oh, and don't forget to throw one of those tasty Red Baron pizzas in the oven while you're prepping your pasta salad.

What would you like for dinner? It's the dinner dilemma question that moms everywhere find themselves asking towards the end of each day. And after a long, hot summer day that's a question that's best answered with a quick and easy one-dish meal that's a tried and true family favorite like this Cheesy Vegetable Rotini. Packed with garden-fresh vegetables and smothered in a delicious cheddar cheese sauce, it's sure to become a favorite for your family too!

What's on the menu tonight?
So what is for dinner tonight? When you ask your kids that question, what answers do you typically hear?

For my kids, it's usually one of two responses depending on who is doing the asking. With Mimi (my mom) the kids give a loud, unanimous shout of, "Pancakes!" Let's face it. Few people make better pancakes than Southern grandmothers. When I ask the question, the answer is an excited, bubbly chant of, "Pasta, pasta, pasta!" Pancakes and pasta--the two meals my kids love most.

As you might imagine, our family frequently eats pasta (and pancakes--not together. Although...that might make for an interesting meal. LOL!) And since pasta is a weekly staple on our dinner menu, I'm always looking for new ways to prepare delicious, nutrition-packed pasta dishes for my family like the Cheesy Vegetable Pasta I'm sharing with you today.

Tastes of Summer
Our family garden and our many visits to local farmers' markets keep our kitchen stocked with fresh produce and products all summer long. Most of the meals I prepare during summer are loaded with farm-fresh products. For this particular recipe, we're cooking up broccoli and carrots that were purchased from a local market.

One thing I haven't been able to purchase locally is cheese made from farm-fresh milk. That's why I love finding cheeses like this Black Creek® Cheddar that isn't loaded with tons of ingredients that I can't even pronounce. They pride themselves on making great cheeses that starts with great milk from the cows of Wisconsin. And I've just got to say that this is one of the tastiest cheddars I've eaten.

The pasta recipe I'm sharing today requires one 7 oz block of cheese, but I suggest you stock up with a few blocks for all your summer cooking and grilling.

It's dinnertime!
Move over mac and cheese! You've just been dethroned by a cheesy, vegetable-packed pasta. Ready to whip up this quick and easy dinner option that will have your kids shouting for seconds. Grab the cheddar and a few other ingredients, and let's start cooking!
"I'm going to have to try some more to decide which I like best," my Dad would grin and announce as he'd help himself to another serving of my mom's homemade chocolate pudding and her vanilla pudding.

When I was a little girl, my mom would frequently spend an afternoon making two batches of homemade pudding to serve for dessert--chocolate and vanilla. My dad's dilemma on which flavor he liked best was his sly way of making sure he always got seconds. He'd feign indecision, scrape his bowl clean, and finally concede that both flavors were equally delicious.
Art with the kids this week for homeschool was DIY marbled paper! And, oh my, was it fun! This craft offers up vivid colors, awesome designs, and the perfect excuse to play with shaving cream! Who wouldn't love that?! Seriously! Kids and adults alike will love this marbling technique that creates ripples of bright, beautiful colors with a little shaving cream and a whole lot of fun!
Before letting the kids dive into this paper marbling project, I tested it out with various supplies and techniques to come up with what I consider to be the easiest and cheapest method. You'll find all my best tips below. As far as supplies, let's take an in-depth look at the ones that were tested. I tried the shaving cream with food coloring, kids' washable paint, and suncatcher paint to see which would work best for marbling paper with shaving cream. Indulge me for just a moment. My inner teacher just had to create a chart for this...
As you can tell, the food coloring scored the highest marks in every area but washability. The suncatcher paint washed off a little better, but the squeezable bottles for the food coloring made it super easy to use. Oh, and the food coloring by far produced the most vivid colors! And, of course, we all know how inexpensive food coloring is. There you have it! Food coloring and shaving cream are my picks for paper marbling with kids.

Yes, I know! Letting kids loose with shaving cream and food coloring is making some of you a little nervous just thinking about it. BUT I have a solution for that too!
We love our biscuits here in the South, but these buttery, flaky cheddar biscuits are on a whole new level. Bursting with the flavors of cheddar and garlic, they're a savory biscuit that's truly irresistible. It only takes minutes to mix up these fresh, made-from-scratch biscuits. And the mix and drop technique not only makes them quick and easy but also gives them that simple homemade look.
Birthdays have always been a BIG deal in my family. So...when my oldest daughter recently asked for cheddar biscuits and popcorn shrimp for her birthday dinner, that's exactly what she got. Can you tell what her favorite restaurant is? We don't have to eat at Red Lobster to enjoy their signature cheddar bay biscuits, though. This simple recipe is just as good--if not better than the original. Yes, these cheddar and garlic biscuits are really that good! They certainly met with the birthday girl's approval.
Dorot Gardens!
I know I already mentioned how quick and easy this recipe is. Do you want to know what made it even easier? Dorot Gardens! If you've ever wanted to snap your fingers and instantly have all the washing and chopping of your fresh herbs done, this is your answer!

I absolutely LOVE cooking with fresh herbs during the warmer months when we have a garden bursting with fresh herbs and vegetables. With risks of frost still, we haven't planted our herb garden for this year yet.

Dorot Gardens to the rescue, though. They have done all the work for me--from growing to prepping. It's like having my own personal sous chef. All I had to do was drop in some of the pre-portioned herbs and garlic into my cheddar biscuits, and I was good to go!
Make your morning delicious with a fresh batch of hot cinnamon rolls. This made-from-scratch recipe can be pulled together in about one hour. That means you're only one hour away from sitting down to a plate of warm, soft cinnamon rolls dripping with a sweet, sugary glaze. Oh, and they require less than ten ingredients to make. Yes, that's it! And did I mention they're made with almond milk and are completely vegan? Here's my simple recipe for Homemade Vegan Cinnamon Rolls!

"Mmmm, momma! Wha's that smell?"
"That's the cinnamon rolls that I'm baking in the oven, sweet boy. And guess what?"
"Wha', momma?"
"There is no dairy in them, so you can have them too! I made them with your almond milk."
"Yay! I so es-cited!"

And there it is! As my four-year-old skips out of the kitchen laughing and exclaiming to his brother and sister, I can't help but smile at how happy he is knowing he'll be able to indulge in this batch of ooey, gooey cinnamon rolls. He is, after all, my main reason for baking with almond milk.

I've been working around my little guy's food allergies since he was first diagnosed with a severe dairy allergy--among other allergies--at only three weeks old. My first big breakthrough was right before his first birthday when I was attempting to make him a dairy-free cake and I discovered a little baking secret. With a good nut milk and vegan butter, he could still enjoy all my baked confections. Now, most of my cakes, bread, and other baked goods have these simple substitutions so the whole family can enjoy them together.

Dairy allergy or not, almond milk is a delicious, creamy alternative. I don't even have an allergy and nut milk is the only milk I'll drink now. It's that good!
Relaxed Mornings are for Baking!
Not to change the subject, but did you know we are a homeschool family? One of the perks of homeschooling--and there are a lot--are those mornings when I can take the time to bake what my kids fondly call "a hot breakfast." What's on the menu for this particular morning? Cinnamon rolls! You just can't beat a relaxed morning spent baking while the kids start their lessons and the aroma of cinnamon wafts through the air. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
These are so easy! Ready to mix up a batch for yourself and your family? Here's the recipe straight from my kitchen to yours!
That's how it is living in the South. A true snowfall is a rare treat that snowballs into a flurry of school closings, icy roads, cozy mittens, and wet galoshes.

Our yard turning into a winter wonderland had the kids scurrying around for their scarves, hats, and coats. They couldn't wait to get outside and play. So I snuggled them up in multiple layers and the handmade scarves and hats from their Mimi. And they were off! I couldn't help but smile as I watched them make tracks in the snow, sled down the neighbor's hill, engage in a lively snowball fight, and even make a small snowman with a carrot nose.

The snow isn't the only thing to cheer about on a snow day, though! There's also the mugs of hot cocoa and sweet treats to enjoy after the outside fun is done. After my kids had enjoyed as much snowy fun as the freezing temperatures would let them stand, they stepped back into the warmth of the house, peeled off the wet layers, and snuggled under blankets to thaw off. And to enjoy some delicious treats!

If you like to treat your kids to mugs of hot chocolate and other winter-themed confections on snowy days, you're going to love this week's features. And few things say, "I love you!" quite like homemade treats. What's better than making homemade snacks for the ones you love? How about making them with the ones you love? Here are several Valentine's Day snacks that are perfect to make with the youngest loves in your life--the kids!

One of my favorite things to do with my kids during the holiday season is to bake and make homemade goodies. Unfortunately, we didn't get all our baking fix this year since the whole family came down with the flu followed up by some secondary infections that required antibiotics. Yuck! I know! We ended up being sick for weeks. And truth be told...we were barely able to even enjoy Christmas.

Valentine's Day is our chance, though. We are going to make all the Valentine's Day treats and snacks that our tummies can handle. LOL! Well, maybe not that many for me since I've been on a roll losing weight--35 pounds now. Yay! But for me making homemade treats is less about making the treats and more about making memories. Wouldn't you agree? So...for this Valentine's Day, here are several snack ideas that'll have you and the kids (or grandkids) making wonderful memories in the kitchen.

Each year the kids and I have a BIG crafting session where we make a new handmade ornament inspired by a children's book. It's become a tradition I look forward to year after year. Of course, we make other crafts and ornaments throughout the holiday season, but there is always one that's dubbed the special ornament of the year. I must be in a mood for all things woodsy and rustic because not only did I decorate our Christmas tree in a rustic farmhouse theme, but it also seems to be the direction our handmade ornaments took this year. I love these little ornaments so much that I dove right in with the kids and made a few for myself. You won't be able to resist making some too--right along with your sweet kiddos!
Have you seen the My First Little House Books? There are several in the series including A Little Prairie House, Christmas in the Big Woods, Going to Town, and Winter in the Big Woods which inspired these clay stamped ornaments. Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic books are able to be enjoyed by a younger audience with these beautifully illustrated storybooks. They collectively tell the story of a little pioneer girl whose family traveled across the Midwest. Each one also shares stories of friendship, family, and love. They're sweet tales to cuddle up with and read to the kids during the cold months of winter..or anytime!
Oh, and there will most definitely be pancakes! Those are my little Caleb's favorite food. Yes, we're having a holiday brunch for Thanksgiving this year. I think that's why I had brunch recipes on my mind when trying to pick the features this week. It only made sense to share some of my favorite brunch recipes that you all had linked up as I planned and prepared for our own meal.

Why are we trading the turkey with all its trimmings for a Thanksgiving brunch this year? I know that most families traditionally plan their holiday brunches around Christmas, but we're in a bit of a different situation than most. You see...last Thanksgiving was the first one without my younger sister. If you've followed along for awhile, you probably know that she passed away in May of last year. The November that followed was our year to travel and visit with my husband's family. This year is the first one back here at home without her, so we've decided to do things a little differently.

When my mom brought up Thanksgiving a week ago and asked what I wanted to do, sadness gripped my heart. We're still in that fragile stage of grief. Defensively I wanted to just ignore the holiday, but that's certainly not the right approach. I know that! It was just that in that instant, I couldn't bear the thought of following all of our same traditions without her. Something about it just made the void seem that much greater. The holidays are hard when you're grieving. Anyone else navigating this?

I've realized that instead of letting my heart dwell on the ones who won't be sitting at the table this year--my dad and sister--I need to focus on the ones who will be there--my husband, kids, brother-in-law, and mom. New traditions are still in order. And that's where the idea for a Thanksgiving brunch comes in. Brunch was Allison's favorite type of meal, so it feels like the perfect way to celebrate the day while still honoring her. I'm sure there will be some other new traditions that we'll begin this Thursday, but brunch it is for the meal.

A holiday brunch is a perfect opportunity to gather family and friends together to enjoy warm, delicious comfort food and wonderful company. Most of you are probably doing the traditional turkey and dressing for Thanksgiving Day this year. But perhaps you have a brunch with family and friends planned for earlier in the day? Or maybe on a day closer to Christmas? Or even on Christmas morning! Anytime from now until New Year's Eve grants opportunities to host a holiday brunch filled with all your family's favorites. Enjoy taking a peek at the recipes these bloggers have shared. You might just find a new favorite to serve at your next brunch!
Let's face it! As magical as we want the holidays to be, stress can creep in between the budget strains from holiday shopping and the overwhelming to-do lists. Somewhere along the path to getting older, the magic of the holidays that once held us spellbound now has us frazzled and running short on time. There are extra chores, extra things to buy, extra things to make... I always feel like I need some extra BIG help to get through this extra special time. Maybe it's just me, though. I've always taken a must "do it all", DIY, made-from-scratch approach to things. Does anyone else put these kinds of pressures on themselves during the holiday season?
There are certain recipes that are so deeply rooted in our holiday traditions that they even taste and smell like the holidays. Do you know the ones I'm talking about? They're the recipes that the holiday season just wouldn't feel complete without. Perhaps for you, it's that pie recipe with the perfect flaky crust that goes back multiple generations. Or maybe it's your grandmother's recipe for sweet potato casserole. We all have them--scribbled on recipe cards or lovingly tucked away in a kitchen drawer.

One of those recipes for my family is the cheesy crustless quiche my mother made every year on Christmas morning. "This is a recipe traditionally served for Christmas breakfast. It was one of Joey's favorites. It just wasn't Christmas without quiche. We have carried on the yearly tradition." That's the personal note that's printed beside the recipe in our family cookbook. Joey, my dad, passed away from pancreatic cancer five years ago, but his favorite dish still hits my table every Christmas morning--and other mornings too!
That first holiday season without my dad was a hard one. He had passed away mid-October right on the precipice of what should have been the most joyous time of the year. In an attempt to surround myself with as much joy as possible, I had the house decorated for Christmas before the trick-or-treaters had even come around that year. On a whim, I even baked his quiche on a morning that was weeks away from Christmas. As it bubbled and baked in the oven, a comforting aroma filled the kitchen. It was as though I had brought the feeling of Christmas morning to a dreary October day.
Our crustless quiche recipe is not exclusive to just the holidays now. I've continued to make it whenever I've needed a delicious, warm helping of cheesy comfort food. Its appearances have increased even more since my sister tragically left us too. Sometimes you just need comfort food that feels like home--especially when home feels so far away. Right?
