Glow in the Dark Slime: Sensory Dough Series

It's time for October's segment of the 12 Months of Sensory Dough series!  Each month 11 of my fellow bloggers and I are sharing our playtime adventures involving a different kind of sensory dough. Last month we made No Cook Play Dough, and this month's theme is Glowing Dough! Coming up with a dough recipe that would glow was a bit of a challenge. Taking photos in the dark was even more of a challenge. Here's what we came up with though...

Making Glow in the Dark Slime

Materials:
  • 1-4 oz bottle of glow in the dark glue
  • mixing bowl and spoon
  • water
  • 2 tsp. Borax
Directions:

Pour the bottle of glow in the dark glue into a large mixing bowl. Fill up the empty glue bottle with water and pour the water into the bowl. In a separate bowl, mix together 1/2 cup water and 2 tsp. Borax. Add this mixture to the watered-down glue. Stir everything together until the glue-like mixture becomes a solid dough with a slimy consistency. You may have to stir for a few minutes for the Borax to begin reacting with the glue. Strain out any excess water. Now it's time to play with the slime and see if it glows in the dark.

Note: I turned this into a science lesson for Lydia Grace. She recorded the properties of the slime in her interactive notebook and recorded that its color changed in the dark.
The kids had a lot of fun with this sensory dough recipe. It certainly brought out their silliness! They kept running back and forth between the kitchen table and the darkened laundry room. I think I was just as excited as they were that it actually worked.
